SHIELD (Seniors Harnessing Internet Education for Lasting Defense) is an innovative, community-based cybercrime prevention workshop designed to help law enforcement officers, educators, and community partners protect older adults from cyber-enabled fraud. Grounded in Cyber-Routine Activities Theory, SHIELD has been successfully implemented in the Boston area in collaboration with the Boston Police Department and has received positive evaluation feedback from trainers and community partners.
This Train-the-Trainer workshop focuses on strengthening “muscle memory” for recognizing and responding to potential cyber threats through simulated, hands-on learning materials. Participants will learn practical strategies for educating seniors about phishing, government impersonation, romance scams, investment fraud, tech support scams, verification behaviors, refusal skills, and reporting pathways.
The workshop will also feature SHIELD’s innovative training model, including scenario-based activities, gaming exercises, and an AI-chatbot simulator designed to increase engagement, build scam-recognition skills, and strengthen digitally capable guardianship. All participants will receive SHIELD training materials that they can adapt and use to educate seniors in their own communities, as well as a SHIELD Train-the-Trainer Certificate upon completion.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2027, from 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm. The cost is $35 per person. Registration is limited to 45 participants.
