John Stogner is a Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also serves as the Director of the Criminal Justice Honors Program and as a member of the Public Policy faculty. He is a former President of the Southern Criminal Justice Association (2018-2019) and a recipient of that organization’s Outstanding Educator Award (2023). Dr. Stogner earned a Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Florida and holds degrees in Zoology and Psychology from North Carolina State University and in Public Health from UNC Chapel Hill. His research and teaching focuses on criminological theory and substance use with a particular emphasis on novel and emerging drugs such as synthetic cannabinoids, non-medical fentanyl variants, and bath salts. He also explores health-related criminological issues, peer influence on deviant behavior, and biosocial criminology. Dr. Stogner authored Emerging Trends in Drug Use and Distribution and has published over 75 peer-reviewed studies in journals such as Pediatrics, Addictive Behaviors, Justice Quarterly, Crime & Delinquency, and Crisis. He frequently collaborates with students, having published with 17 different graduate students and 8 undergraduates in the last decade. Dr. Stogner is a lifetime member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and serves as Trustee for Region 2.
